Hey, if you have been looking for a website to practice organic chemistry, congrats, you are there!
On Chemistry Steps, you can find almost all the topics of Organic 1 and 2 for free, practice problems, study guides, and multiple-choice quizzes.
Simply check the Homepage for the topics and associated practice problems you can find after each article:
Some of the features are still paid and this is to support the site. Let’s quickly go over how you can use the materials on the site.
What do you need to master Organic Chemistry?
You need a material to study and that can your lecture notes, the textbook, YouTube videos etc. And importantly, you need lots practice problems. In fact, doing practice problems is the only way to learn organic chemistry!
Now, lets talk about the challenges of both factors we discussed above.
Studying organic chemistry
The problem here is that you may get overwhelmed with the amount of material. You don’t know what is important what is not as much and at the end you get a test that strikes you as if the questions have nothing to do with what you learn in the classroom.
For this, Chemistry Steps offers Organic Chemistry Study Guides which summarize the most important concepts you need to know for the given chapter. It is based on my years of experience in teaching organic chemistry:
The Current Topics covered in these summary sheets are:
- Lewis Structures, Resonance Structures, and Formal Charges
- Geometry and Hybridization
- Molecular Representations
- Acids and Bases
- Conformations of Alkanes and Cycloalkanes
- Stereochemistry and Chirality
- Nucleophilic Substitution – SN1 an SN2
- Elimination Reactions – E1 and E2
- Competition in Substitution and Elimination Reactions; SN1/E1 vs SN2/E2
- Reactions of Alkenes
- Reactions of Alkynes
- Reactions of Alcohols
- The Diels-Alder Reaction
- Reactions of Aromatic Compounds
- Reactions of Aldehydes and ketones
- Reactions of Carboxylic Acids and Carboxylic Acid Derivatives
- Alpha Carbon Chemistry: Enols and Enolates
- Carbohydrates
- How to Solve IR Problems
- NMR Spectroscopy
Where do I practice Organic Chemistry?
Simply go to the topics Index and at the end of each article you will find a set of practice exercises.
All the practice problems are open to everyone for free! I have seen and prepared hundreds of exams for organic chemistry and these practice problems are the types that you will find in your exams. Their difficulty varies from one-step to more advanced ones including step organic synthesis problems.
After working on each question, you have the possibility to first check your answer and then refer to the step-by-step solution.

These are not free and available to CS Prime members. Sorry – aside from spending years on building the material, I also need to pay for the hosting.
The practice problems are the only ones you get to do.
Multiple choice quizzes might be the “easy” way of glancing through the key concepts and getting a feedback on what you need to work more.
These are also included in your Chemistry Steps membership.
